The role of Brazilian and Bangladeshi cultural practicesin the north-western Portuguese cultural landscape: A case study of Braga and Porto

Abstract: This study explores the cultural influence of Brazilian and Bangladeshi communities in Braga and Porto, Portugal. As Portugal’s transitions into an immigration destination fuelled by migrants from different nationalities, discussions on identity and heritage are more constant. This research investigates the flourishing cultural practices of these communities in the public space. Through the critical heritage studies’ framework, municipally sanctioned cultural events, such as festivities, religious initiatives, and monuments, were analysed through case studies to illuminate how these communities engage in politics of belonging, place-making, and cultural syncretism, and finally shaping the local heritage landscape. The findings underscore the significance of these cultural expressions in fostering community engagement, gaining civic recognition, and enriching Braga and Porto’s cultural and touristic appeal. In conclusion, this research sheds light on the evolving dynamics of migration and its cultural implications in Portugal’s coastal regions
