0In this chapter, we present a study on the policies for cinema and audiovisual in Portugal, seeking to understand the main changes concerning production financing. In methodological terms, we used the documentary analysis of the central policies that regulate the area between 2012 and 2022, the consultation of news published in the same period, letters signed by elements of the film industry and the viewing of five parliamentary hearings of professionals in the sector, seeking to highlight the relevance of these voices in the debate on film financing in Portugal. Ultimately, this study highlights the need to rethink the financing policies of cinema and audiovisuals in Portugal in an integrated, strategic, and continuous way. Throughout this process, we seek to cross, on the one hand, the understanding of the reality of national cultural life and, on the other, the insufficiencies and challenges of the financing, circulation and distribution processes of Portuguese cinema.
