0The FEMglocal Seminar – Contemporary social movements and the media: interactions and contradictions took place on 10 October 2023 at two venues: Universidade Lusófona, Centro Universitário do Porto and MIRA FORUM.
At a time when contemporary social movements, such as those defending the right to housing and climate justice, as well as feminist and racial movements, are gaining prominence in the media and the national public sphere, the event sought to reflect on how these movements manifest themselves, are mediated and impact society and citizenship.
The round table Researching activisms in the Portuguese context was attended by MigraMediaActs PI Rosa Cabecinhas, as well as Carla Malafaia (JustFutures), Ricardo Campos (ArtCitizenship), Sofia Caldeira (Marie Sklodowska-Curie postdoctoral researcher) and Ana Sofia Pereira (FEMglocal postdoctoral fellow) who came together to discuss activism in Portugal, how it is studied in academia and the importance of transcending the barriers of academia in the dissemination of this knowledge.
The seminar was organised with the participation of researcher Carla Cerqueira, also a member of the MigraMediaActs project. In total, the event featured three round tables and a plenary session, bringing together national and international experts from various fields (journalism, academia, activist practice) to explore these and other pressing issues.
