Migrations and communication in a planetary age: debates and actions

International Conference
University of Minho
April 29-30, 2025

The international conference Migrations and Communication in the Planetary Era: Debates and Actions will take place on April 29 and 30, 2025, at the University of Minho in Braga. Preceding the conference, the pre-event “Colonial (De)visions: Dialogues in Visual Culture, Alterities, and Artivism”, organized by Sopcom’s Visual Culture Working Group, will be held on April 28.

Serving as spaces for debate and reflection, the conference and pre-event aim to explore the multiple dimensions of communication, visual culture, and social activism to better understand their roles in (re)shaping relational spaces and poetics, as well as in fostering attentive listening. In a fragmented planetary context marked by daily “crises,” the international conference seeks to question, rethink, and rebuild community pathways through communication.

Emphasizing linguistic diversity and varied forms of communication, oral presentations, panels, and artistic interventions can be delivered in Portuguese, English, Spanish, or French. However, sessions will not offer simultaneous translation. The conference will include both in-person and online sessions.
