0On April 10th, the Postgraduate Room of the Department of Geography at the Azurém Campus in Guimarães hosted the 1st International Meeting on Space, Power, and Politics. Organized by Luís Moreira and João Sarmento from the Department of Geography at the University of Minho, the event stood out for sharing knowledge on contemporary Political Geography phenomena.
Through critical analysis of geographical space, power, and political dynamics, various topics were addressed, ranging from the journey of Syrian refugees to Portugal and within Portuguese territory to the Galician question as a colony, exploring monuments and memorials of the Ukrainian diaspora in Portugal, to the challenges of “urbicides” in times of conflict, exemplified by Ukraine, and the nuances of elections in Mozambique.

The meeting was attended by Kostyantyn Mezentsev from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Ukraine, Chisoka Simões and Jorge Garrido from the Institute of Social Sciences (ICS) of the University of Minho, Sarah Shrbaji from the School of Architecture, Art, and Design of the University of Minho, and Javier de Pablo from the Complutense University of Madrid.
